ABOUT DENNIS A. SMITH

Early Life and Education
Dennis Arthur Smith was born in Oceanside in 1950 at Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital, the only son of Richard and Theresa Smith. He attended South Oceanside Elementary, St. Mary’s Star of the Sea, and graduated from Oceanside High School in 1968.

Swimming and Lifeguarding
Dennis began swimming competitively in 6th grade under legendary OHS swim coach Bill Wagner. As a varsity swimmer all four years, his team dominated the Avocado League and CIF in the mid-1960s. He spent nine summers as an Oceanside beach lifeguard and surfed local beaches, Hawaii, and Costa Rica.

Teaching and Career
After earning his degree at UC Irvine, Dennis returned to Oceanside to teach history at Oceanside High and later at El Camino High, where he also served as librarian for more than 40 years. He pioneered the Advanced Placement U.S. History program at El Camino, helped establish broader A.P. offerings, coached swim and water polo, and supported his fellow teachers as vice president of the Oceanside Teachers’ Association.

Passion for History and Community
Dennis was a lifelong historian, traveler, and collector who loved sharing stories that connected America’s past to the present. He remained deeply rooted in Oceanside his entire life of 74 years and proudly supported the Oceanside Historical Society.
