Celebrate Black Owned Businesses in Oceanside

The Oceanside Historical Society, together with the Oceanside Theatre Co., is seeking information on Black-owned businesses, past and present. We are reaching out to residents, civic leaders, churches, and organizations to help us identify person(s) who have or who currently own a Black-owned business. It is our hope and intention to document their existence, their locations, their stories/journeys as well as to collect photos, if possible.

This gathering of information will culminate in an event in February 2023 to celebrate Black History Month at the Oceanside Theatre Co., 217 North Coast Highway.
We are hoping that you will participate in the identification of persons, past and present, so that they can be included in the history of our city, but also be recognized for their specific role as a Black Business Owner.

If you are or were a Black Business Owner, please take time to answer the brief questions below. If you know/remember a former Black Owned Business in Oceanside, please provide that information. Help the Oceanside Historical Society document and celebrate Black Owned Businesses as a part of our city’s history!

As a black business owner downtown Oceanside, I started inquiring about our history in Oceanside. Quickly I realized that it’s our responsibility to make sure we are documenting our history with the Historical Society. We’ve teamed up with the Oceanside Theatre Company to create a space for all of us to tell our stories, past and present, in a Black History program February 2023. If we don’t do this now, we lose a pivotal generation of our legacy.

The call to action is to document the details of black businesses in Oceanside, including pictures and video.

Submit these details to the Oceanside Historical Society by December 15, 2022.
