Oceanview Cemetery

Recently Uncovered Headstones

South Oceanside Girl Scouts and their parents, and members of the community along with the Oceanside Historical Society helped to clean the Oceanview Cemetery on May 27, 2006 in time for Memorial Day.  Along with picking up trash and leaves, the Girl Scouts focused on uncovering headstones that have been "lost" due to overgrowth of grass.  In most cases the headstones were completely covered and the girls "discovered" them by using probes and then uncovered them.  Headstones that were uncovered include the following:  William and Anna Merrill, Katherine M. Clarke, Lester Gunter, Gladys Crowley, D. F. Wiseman, Rudyard and Pauline Perkiss.  Also uncovered were Samuel Tyson, a pioneer of Oceanside of whom Tyson Street is named, and Elise Reed Averill, one of Oceanside's first school teachers who taught school in 1888 and 1889 and Sarah Clewett, who came to Oceanside before the turn of the century and was Oceanside's telephone operator for over twenty years. Many thanks goes to the girls and their parents and concerned members of the community.
